Iwona Siwek-Front: *Wyzwolone* / *Die Befreiten* / *Liberate* / *The Liberated*

Wyzwolone

Mówi o sobie artysta. Iwona Siwek-Front, artysta, córka pary krakowskich artystów. Iwona wyniosła z domu talent i pracowitość, poczucie wewnętrznej wolności i potrzebę niezależności.

Bo artystyczny dom krakowski to przeciwieństwo mieszczańskiego konserwatyzmu. I Kraków może wychować wolnego ducha, to tu tworzyli i tworzą niezwykli ludzie sceny, pióra, pięciolinii, pędzla... Ojciec, Marian Siwek, zmarły 17 maja 2007 roku wybitny artysta-malarz i rysownik-outsider z pokolenia Stanisława Wójtowicza i Jerzego Panka, autor unikalnych portretów Jonasza Sterna, Tadeusza Kantora czy Idy Haendel. Mama, artysta-projektant, najsurowszy krytyk i zarazem najczulszy doradca córki.

Dobry dom wymaga i wyposaża. Zobowiązuje jak szlachectwo. Do solidności i wyczucia smaku, pracowitości i poczucia humoru.

Notatki". Iwona to artysta, doktor sztuk, chuligan i baba. Prywatnie żona i mama. Wewnętrznie baba zadowolona. Zewnętrznie baba zadbana. Baba z rozumu, zmysłów i ciała.

Główny temat obrazów, rysunków, filmów i komiksów Iwony to ludzie. Iwona obserwuje i notuje. Nagrywa i rysuje. Czasami dla żartu portretuje koty, psy, krowy i żaby. Ale tak naprawdę interesują ją ludzie. A jeśli ludzie, to przede wszystkim kobiety, baby. Tu kuszą przechodniów kształtami, ponętne i  tajemnicze, przekorne i kolorowe. A każda inna, każda swoja. Każda niepowtarzalna.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWZv9prTBtE

I to właśnie wiedzą artyści.

I drugie nazwisko, "Front". To tu powstają obrazy oddające nerw czasu w punkt.

Teraz idziemy my, baby! Wiemy swoje i wymagamy.

Picasso wusste, was er sagte.

In privato moglie e madre. Interiormente baba appagata. Esteriormente baba ben tenuta.

Ciascuna diversa, ciascuna in gamba. Ciascuna irrepetibile.

No!

Ora avanti, noi, donnoni-baby! Siamo coscienti ed esigenti. Coscienti perché libere. Esigenti perché liberate. Fate largo!

The Liberated

(translation: Agnieszka Schoen, proof-reader Joanna Skoczyńska)

She calls herself an artist. Iwona Siwek-Front, is the daughter of artists from Cracow, Poland. She inherited their talent. At home  she learned about applying herself, developed a sense of inner freedom and the need for independence. She is not a yelling feminist and she does not take part in any revolutionary discussions. She does not  follow any trends nor does she rely on any styles nor fashions nor cliques. For her, art is neither a sports' competition or a race to the top. Being original in art  and expressing oneself cannot be measured in points. Iwona says: I’m an ordinary woman, a ‘baba’ with a healthy amount of the hooligan about me. Quite simply I am an artist. (In Polish the word 'baba' means" a 'good woman', a representative of womankind. There is no equivalent word in English; read: bʌbʌ). But we have to add an artist with a hell of a lot of talent.

An artistic home is the opposite of what middle-class conservatism imposes. But even there, in Cracow, a free spirit can be raised and there have been and there are many of them, extraordinary artists from the theater, literature, music and the arts... Iwona’s father, Marian Siwek, who died in May 17th, 2007 was a significant painter and illustrator, a well-known outsider from the generation of  Stanisław Wójtowicz and Jerzy Panek. The author of unique portraits of Jonasz Stern, Tadeusz Kantor and Ida Haendel, to name a few. Iwona’s mother is not only an designer, but also her severest critic and at the same time her most affectionate advisor.

Coming from a "good old family" has its implications. It obliges one to be reliable, to have good taste, to be diligent and to have a sense of humor. A good upbringing sets you up for life. Iwona is a graduate of the legendary ‘Number One’, Nowodworski High School, also attended by the future Polish king Jan III Sobieski a couple of centuries ago and later on in the C19th Iwona's most admired master and versatile genius Stanisław Wyspiański.

Iwona graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Design at the Cracow  Academy of Fine Arts, where she mastered her skills in woodcut and animated film. And because she lives in a royal city where ‘finis coronat opus’ is taken more than seriously, she gained her Ph.D. with her dissertation on ‘The Semi(o)sphere of My City.  Notes.’ Iwona is an artist, she has a Ph. Doctorate in arts; she is a hooligan and a ‘baba’. Privately, she is a wife and she is a mother. Internally she is a satisfied woman. Externally she is a woman who has taken care of herself. That’s who she is: a ‘baba’ in her mind, body and her soul.

People are the main subject  of  her paintings, drawings, films and cartoons: how they live, what they feel, what they dream of, but first of all what they talk about. Iwona is an astute observer, she makes notes, records and draws. (And it happens from time to time that she draws cats, dogs, cows and frogs just for the fun of it). But above all people are what interests her and these are mostly  women, those  ‘babas’. Men figure mainly as " extras ". In life it is women who count. They literally populate her paintings, they are seen on  her studio balcony, in the heart of Cracow, on the corner of Wiślna and Gołębia Street. Here they seduce pedestrians with their curvy shapes, alluringly mysterious expressions and their wilfulness. Each one of of them different, each one herself and unique.

The whole cycle of ‘Babas’ can be considered as a continuation of  provocative works of art from the  20th century, which depict women as  they really are, often showing naked breast, bellies, thighs…  Because Iwona's ‘baba’ is actually not an ordinary woman, old-fashioned and suppressed, but a ‘Baba’ with a capital ‘B’ or even four capital letters: B-A-B-A as Iwona usually signs her works e.g. ‘BABA The Night Queen’, ‘BABA The Relaxed One’, ‘BABA Freely Drinking’, ‘BABA The Difficult One’… and even if it happens that ‘baba’ is ordinary  then definitely in an unusual way namely ‘BABA  The Ordinary One, Sweetened with a Filthy Soul’. The BABA  is both the philosophy and the trademark of Iwona; besides, her BABA  is a contemporary woman who gives priority to her freedom over & above convention, who is independent  and who has her own cash and who always has her own  opinion. A woman with balls? No! A BABA with all her indisputable female attributes. The Super-BABA.

The colourful, giant female characters of Niki de Saint Phalle, such as the famous Nana - A Cathedral (created together with Jean Tanguely in 1966) in their time revolutionized the aesthetic sense and  perception of a woman with an untouchable and idealized nature, referencing to the fertile pagan Venus from Willendorf rather than to the centuries long image of a pale, bloodless virgin. The  famous heavy, chubby women of the Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero are a challenge to the fashion world full of  malnourished, skinny models. The actor Jan Nowicki, who like Iwona is also a regular visitor at the Cracow bar ‘Vis-à-vis’ used to say: "Where  does today's fashion for ‘arse less ' come from?"

The 21st century is the century of women. Not of St.Theresas or of baby dolls, it is the era of women-babas. They take matters into  their own hands, save the starving in Africa, manage small loans in Latin America, organize trade unions in Bangladesh and join the Pink Sari Gangs in India with batons in their hands to stand against the  men who threaten them… They are mothers, family leaders and workers. For centuries they have been carrying on their shoulders the heaviest duties and did the most despised profession in the world, they were  prostitutes & whores. Can a woman be a whore today? Absolutely yes! But ready with her own agenda.

For centuries, men have specialized in ruling, dividing, fighting, guarding borders and building walls. Women, on the contrary, want all those walls down. They want to destroy them; or rather artists, regardless of gender, want to live in a world without any walls. But first of all women are the ones who care more about how to  survive than how to reign. They know all too well that victory requires victims and because they are mothers they do not want to mourn their own children, even including the mothers of heroes and terrorists who are destined to go directly to paradise and become martyrs. All mothers want is for their children to outlive them, not the other way round.

Artists know all of this very well, and because they are more sensitive, they are able to perceive the most subtle tremor in the collective unconsciousness. Their talent is a gift, a kiss of a muse, the sixth, seventh and eighth sense… Pablo Picasso once said: ‘The  artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place:  from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.’ And he knew all too well what he said. If he had not translated all of what he felt with his senses into the language of art, his ‘Guernica’, a harrowing tribute to a bombed city, would never gain the expressive power, which makes it one of his most famous  works.

An artist is like a soldier on the frontline, but in this case it is not a war front. It is the sum of events, the presence of history. Therefore, the most outstanding artists are often ahead of their time. They are pioneers, forerunners, often misunderstood, because the world has yet to catch up with them. It is surely no coincidence that Iwona has 2 meaningful surnames: ‘Siwek’ (‘a grey horse’), after her father, a painter not only of people yelling for freedom, but also of horses, grey horses. His dynamic race horses seem to jump out of the picture frames as if more space were needed. The second name ‘Front’ she has from her husband; so she stands there in her amazingly spacious studio, surrounded by her own and her father’s paintings, at the 'front' of  history. This is the place where all her zeitgeist works are created.

The meaningful cycles of Iwona’s paintings, including ‘The Night Women’ and ‘Because of Botox You Won't Go to Paradise’ are only the prelude to an even more impressive series ‘The Liberated’. What is significant is that the fancy women are gone, because the time of self- confident, strong, conscious women has come. They can stir pots as vigorously as they can stir up politics and economics; what they want is peace in the world based on their own rules. No more second row places, no more stereotypes, clichés, corny jokes and sexist advertising; no more do's and don’ts… Here we come, the babas! We are aware of what we want and we dare to demand it. We are aware, because we are free. We demand, because we are liberated. It's time to get out of our way, please!
